Best Essential Oil Blends For The Classroom Atmosphere

Best Essential Oil Blends for the Classroom

Do you know that scents can also affect the behavior of children?

That’s very true!

You may not be aware of the power of essential oils on the behavior and attitude of children in a classroom. I wasn’t until I smelled a fragrance in a colleague’s classroom and asked about it. She told me it was a blend of essential oils being diffused into the classroom that had the effect of calming the students.

Essential oils are compounds that are extracted from specific plants. Each plant has a flavor and scent that is called its essence. The essence is extracted through cold pressing, or steam or water distillation. The essence is then combined with a carrier oil and is ready for use.

I bet you’d like to ask… My favorite is the Cliganic Organic Essential Oils Set. Now, you’re wondering why, and you’ll soon find out below!

Best Essential Oil Diffusers

You will need a mechanism to disperse the benefits of essential oils around your classroom. An oil diffuser breaks the essential oil into smaller molecules and sends them on their way around the room. The main job of a diffuser is to disperse the molecules of each type of oil or blend in a concentration that is comfortable and easy to breathe.

The scent shouldn’t become overbearing. Most of the best oil diffusers are small and attractive devices that fit into anyone’s home décor as well as a classroom. The following diffusers do not use heat, which can damage the essential oil’s healing properties. They use ultrasound for an extremely fast vibration. Here is my choice for essential oil diffusers for classroom use.

1. InnoGear Essential Oil Diffuser

InnoGear Essential Oil Diffuser, Upgraded Diffusers for Essential Oils Aromatherapy Diffuser Cool Mist Humidifier with 7 Colors Lights 2 Mist Mode Waterless Auto Off for Home Office Room, Basic White

The InnoGear ultrasonic diffuser is very small, 3.9 x 5.5 inches, and be placed on a desk. It is also easy to pack if you want to use it at home too. It has two misting modes that work on and off for six to eight hours or a constant mist for three to four hours. When the water runs out, it automatically turns off.

The diffuser is made from non-toxic material and requires no heat. It’s a cute little device with eight colors that can be dim or bright. You can use the light feature without using the mist features. It also functions as a humidifier and evenly distributes the humidity around the room. If you want a stronger mist, the water should be below the MAX line.

2. URPOWER Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser

URPOWER 500ml Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser Humidifier Diffusers for Essential Oils Room Decor Lighting with 4 Timer Settings, 7 Color Changing Lamps and Waterless Auto Shut-Off

This URPOWER diffuser has three functions. It is a diffuser, a night light, and a humidifier. The ultrasonic technology produces vibrations 2.4 times every second, which breaks the essential oil and water into micro-particles without heat. At 168 x 121 mm, it holds 500 ml of water. The diffuser comes with a charger adaptor, a measuring cup, and a user manual.

The mist intensity can be adjusted for strong and weak and when the water container is empty, the device will automatically turn off. It can also be adjusted for different intervals of mist.

3. Ultimate Aromatherapy Diffuser & Essential Oil Set

Ultimate Aromatherapy Diffuser & Essential Oil Set - Ultrasonic Diffuser & Top 10 Essential Oils - 400ml Diffuser with 4 Timer & 7 Ambient Light Settings - Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils - Lavender

This is a great little set especially if you are just starting. Ultimate Diffuser & Oil Set comes with an ultrasonic diffuser that holds 300 ml of water and 10 high-quality, therapeutic grade essential oils, including lavender, orange, tea tree, eucalyptus, lemongrass, peppermint, nutmeg, jasmine, clove, and spearmint.

It has a subtle light strip with seven light modes. The diffuser is a neutral woodgrain design and may be more suitable for a classroom than one with colorful lights. It automatically shuts off when the water is finished.

The oils are created from high-quality plants and have no additives or fillers. They are 100 percent pure oils created through cold press extraction or steam distillation, depending on the type of plant and location where it is harvested. I recommend this because it is a good deal, and you get everything you need right from the start.

Benefits Of Using Essential Oils In the Classroom

If it’s possible to assuage anxiety, inspire activity, and abet focus with the simple addition of fragrance in the air, why not?

Most elementary-aged children find it difficult to sit quietly for hours. This is one reason I always recommend flexible seating in a classroom. Essential oil diffusion is another method of affecting mood and attention.

Here are some uses of essential oils in the classroom:

  • Calm nerves, reduce stress, and relax
  • Purify the air of cold and flu germs
  • Improve concentration for better memory
  • Improve mental focus
  • Initiate a happy mood

Risks Of Diffusing Oils In A Classroom

The main risk of diffusing essential oils in the classroom is the effect it will have on different children.

Since children have a variety of health constitutions and may be taking medications, have allergies, asthma, and have a compromised immune system, it is important to understand fully the risks.

For example, many essential oils should not be used near children who have asthma. Some of them you will know but others you may test first. If a child has an inhaler, he or she should keep it handy when new oil is diffused.

Another example is the effect lavender has on children with ADHD, ADD, and autism. They tend to have the opposite reaction to the sedentary response that is intended. If a child is super-sensitive to chemicals, some oils may give him or her headaches, dizziness, and nausea.

If their immune system is weak, there is a higher risk of respiratory difficulties and cognitive dysfunction. Many of these risks can be mitigated by the amount of time oil is diffused and the length of time between diffusions.

Reducing The Risks

These risks can be reduced to almost none or very little. If you think you would like to experience the benefits of essential oils, talk to the parents first and get permission to use them in the classroom.

Meanwhile, you will learn more about each child’s physical and mental health that will help you choose the best oil blends. If there are any at-risk issues such as asthma or a weakened immune system, you will be able to avoid certain oils.

The most important thing to remember is the selection of oil is the key. Another way to reduce risk is to learn as much as you can about the effect of each oil. Once you have selected the best oils and learned how to blend them, you should make sure you know the proper way to diffuse them.

You can also reduce risk by avoiding essential oil diffusion in a classroom of children under six years old. Some oils are not recommended for very young children.

Keep your oils in a locked drawer or a high shelf where they cannot be knocked off and broken.

Finally, never put the oil on your students’ skin even if it is diluted. The safest way to get the benefit is through diffusing.

Best Essential Oil Blends And Their Recipes

I have studied essential oil blends for the classroom for my own knowledge and to give you the benefit of what I discovered. Here are 9 oil blends for the classroom and their recipes:

How To Diffuse Oils Safely In The Classroom

Before starting to diffuse essential oils in your classroom, you need to consider a few things. Start by getting permission from your principal or school board. If you run a private daycare or homeschooling center, you can start with the parents.

  • Do the parents agree? Most parents don’t mind a little essential oil misting in the classroom, but if their child has a reaction or is allergic to a plant, they will ask you to stop.
  • If you run a day-care center, remember it is not advisable to use essential oils for children under six months old. Some oils are safe for toddlers and older children such as ginger, cedarwood, and sweet orange.
  • Carefully monitor the timing of misting. Since you will use different oils for different results, you will need to decide how long to leave the invigorating oils misting, the calming oils misting and the air cleaning oils misting. The timing is important because the maximum effect comes with the length of dispersal time.
  • Also, monitor the results. Are the oils you are using giving noticeable results. For example, when the children need calming, does the calming oil blend help? Don’t expect magical results, but if you notice any effect, it is probably worth it.
  • Don’t apply the oil to your students’ skin. Even if you blend it with an innocuous carrier oil, ingesting or applying essential oils to the skin are something parents may do, but not teachers. Diffusing oils into the air is safer than applying them to the skin.
  • Signs that you should stop or change oils in your diffuser can be seen in your students. If you see a child or several children developing headaches, coughing, nausea or vomiting, wheezing or breathing difficulty or skin rashes, you should stop the diffuser and inform the parents.

There is a good chance none of these problems will arise. Watch this video to see how one teacher has successfully used essential oil diffusion in her classroom.

Final Thoughts

I have shown you in the past how light can affect the behavior of children and now you can also use scents!

I use Cliganic Organic Essential Oils Set in my classroom and believe it has a beneficial effect on the mood and attention of my students. It’s organic, it’s not tested on animals and most importantly, my students love it!

However, I jumped through all the hoops to get permission from my school and parents before I started, and I’m glad I made the effort.
